Preparing Digital Artwork for Cadmus Professional Communications with

Macromedia FreeHand 9.0 for Windows

PLEASE NOTE: When creating graphics in illustration programs such as Macromedia FreeHand 9.0 for outputting to an imagesetter or platesetter, it is extremely important that the person creating the illustration have a thorough understanding of imaging in a prepress environment. There are complex problems that can occur at output if paths are set up improperly, colors are indicated incorrectly, or other elements such as traps are constructed poorly. The more complicated an illustration, the greater the probability of problems at output, and therefore the greater need for expertise and experience in creating the files.

This instruction set covers the following topics:

Setting Preferences

Creating  Graphics

Exporting  Graphics

Setting Preferences

1. Setup Output Options. From the FreeHand menu bar, go to (File->Output Options). Match the settings shown below.

2. Setup Preferences. From the FreeHand menu bar, go to (File-> Preferences).

     A. Choose Import and match the settings shown below.

     B. Choose Export and match the settings shown below.

Creating Graphics

1. Import only TIFF or EPS graphics. Do not import any RGB graphics. The Output Option "Convert RGB to process" does not apply to imported graphics. It applies only to colors applied within FreeHand.

Please note: Some journals now require that color be submitted in RGB color mode. To learn more about the RGB workflow click here.

2. Make sure that any multipanel figures (i.e., figures with parts labeled a, b, c, d, etc.) are assembled into one file. Rather than sending four files (Fig1a, Fig1b, Fig1c, Fig1d) the four parts should be assembled into one piece and supplied as one file.

3. Create the figure at 100% of print size so that no scaling is necessary.

4. Do not use Pattern stokes or fills.

5. Convert all text to paths (Text -> Convert To Paths). This eliminates the requirement of sending CPC fonts. There isn't a significant quality loss when converting text to paths.

6. Verify that all imported graphics are embedded(Edit -> Links). Each graphic should have - Embedded after it. If not, select the graphic line and click on Embed.

Exporting Graphics

1. Save the file as Editable EPS. From the FreeHand menu bar, go to (File -> Save as...). Select Editable EPS as shown below. Be sure to recheck your Output Options before saving.
